CHRC Researcher Leads Historic First Robotic Living Donor Liver Transplant in Portugal
For the first time in Portugal, and only the second time in Europe, a fully robotic living donor liver transplant was successfully performed at Curry Cabral Hospital – ULS São José.
This medical breakthrough was led by Hugo Pinto Marques, CHRC researcher, Full Professor at NOVA Medical School, and Director of the Hepatobiliopancreatic and Transplantation Centre at ULS São José.
In an unprecedented procedure, two surgical teams operated simultaneously using two surgical robots, enabling a minimally invasive surgery with enhanced safety and faster recovery for both the donor and the recipient.
This extraordinary achievement not only represents a historic milestone for robotic surgery in Portugal, but also highlights the crucial role of research and innovation carried out by CHRC investigators in advancing medical science.
The CHRC warmly congratulates Hugo Pinto Marques and his team for this outstanding accomplishment.
