Biography

Maria João Silva is a research scientist at the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA), where she leads the Genetic Toxicology Group of the Human Genetics Department. Her research has been directed to the environmental determinants of health, focusing on the gene-environment interaction, and the cellular and molecular mechanisms of genotoxicity. She holds a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, PhD (equivalent) in Genetic Toxicology, being a specialist in Human Genetics (Order of Pharmacists) and a European Registered Toxicologist. She has been the scientific coordinator of INSA’s participation in European Projects, including the ongoing European Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC). Her current research interests include new approach methodologies for an integrated assessment of genotoxicity and epigenotoxicity, nanotoxicology, human biomonitoring and regulatory science.
