Biography

Rúben has worked as a researcher in the Laboratory of Engineering and Health in Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL) since 2017. His work specializes in the research of biomarkers through the use of metabolomics and proteomics for various case studies, e.g., toxicology, pharmacology, transplant rejection, potential of stem cells, research on exosomes, and antibiotic resistances, through an approach of various multivariate analysis techniques, statistics and machine learning algorithms. Recently, he is dedicated to the study of COVID-19 in an FCT approved project, which serves as the basis for his PhD thesis: “Diagnosis and prognosis disease biomarkers on critically ill patients with COVID-19. A Machine Learning approach”. Rúben has graduated in 2007 from a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering, with a subsequent specialization in the field of Maintenance and Production, also in Mechanical Engineering (ISEL). In 2019, he graduated with honors as first in class, and with a merit award from Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior (DGES), for his work in the Master in Biomedical Engineering, also from his alma mater. Currently, he is continuing his work while being a PhD candidate in Nova Medical School, from Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
