CHRC researchers awarded with the “Best Impact Paper 2024” by the American Physiological Society
A team of researchers from the CHRC and the Clinical Nutrition Research Group at NOVA Medical School was recently awarded the “Best Impact Paper 2024” by the American Physiological Society (APS).
The awarded article – Decreased adiponectin/leptin ratio relates to insulin resistance in adults with obesity – authored by Inês Castela, under the co-supervision of Professors Diana Teixeira and Diogo Pestana, highlights the role of adipose tissue dysfunction as a key factor in the pathophysiology of obesity and insulin resistance.
This study provides evidence supporting the central role of adipose tissue dysfunction in the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying obesity and insulin resistance. Early identification of individuals at higher risk of developing metabolic complications — through the assessment of adipose tissue function and the clinical staging of obesity and its dynamic phenotypes — may contribute to the personalisation of therapeutic strategies and more effective clinical decision-making.
The award was presented during this year’s edition of the APS Congress, which recognises original or review articles published in the American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism that demonstrate high impact and relevance for the scientific community.
