On July 14, marking the International Non-Binary People’s Day, the CHRC and CIES-Iscte jointly hosted a seminar on “Binarism and the non-binary”, organized by Mário JDS Santos, member of CHRC.

A panel of 4 invited speakers contributed to the discussion on sex and gender in the field of health and healthcare research, social movements, and children’s literature. Particularly, in the field of health research, Mário JDS Santos addressed some of the issues with collecting data on gender as a binary variable, such as the common overlapping of gender and sex as equivalents. Despite having some alternatives, this seminar contributed to acknowledging the complexity of this issue and the need to further discuss new solutions for the development of inclusive and diversity-sensitive health research.
