Portugal at the Centre of Global Biomedical Innovation: Strategic Vision from the CHRC Coordinator
Helena Canhão, Coordinator of the CHRC and Director of NOVA Medical School, recently published an opinion article in Observador, titled “Portugal at the Centre of Global Biomedical Innovation”, in which she reflects on the country’s emerging role in the international health innovation landscape.
In her article, Helena Canhão argues that Portugal is uniquely positioned to establish itself as a strategic hub for biomedical research, thanks to its scientific talent, the growing emphasis on international partnerships, and the commitment to science that delivers social impact. She highlights the importance of ensuring that innovation addresses real population needs, by fostering sustainable and equitable solutions – particularly in Portuguese-speaking countries.
She also points to initiatives led by national institutions, such as the CHRC, that are reinforcing Portugal’s presence in high-impact international projects, especially in areas such as personalised medicine, biotechnology, and digital health.
This perspective aligns closely with the CHRC’s mission to produce transformative science, with strong connections between academia, healthcare systems, and society. It is a valuable contribution to the strategic conversation on Portugal’s role in global health – a vision that continues to inspire us to innovate with purpose and collaborate across borders.
