Professor Pedro Póvoa, Director of NOVA Medical School, is part of the research team behind one of the largest international studies ever conducted in intensive care medicine.
Published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, the EFRAIM III study analysed almost 10,000 critically ill immunocompromised patients admitted to 103 ICUs across 26 countries, including patients treated in Portugal. The results show that early administration of high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy is associated with better clinical outcomes in immunocompromised patients with acute respiratory failure.
The research also identifies factors associated with mortality and the need for intubation, contributing to earlier and more individualised clinical decision-making.
The data further suggest that, today, intubation can make a difference and help save lives in these patients. The study also highlights the progress made in intensive care medicine and the importance of an individualised, evidence-based approach to the treatment of critically ill patients.
